Rules and FAQ

Rules and FAQ
Rules
1) No godmodding. You are only playing your character. Do not make decisions for other characters. This includes deciding on actions, thoughts or anything they might have done in the past with prior consent from the player. When in doubt, always ask permission. If your character has any kind of powers/extraordinary abilities, you should have a permissions post and it should be easily available with a link on the taken character page along with your other information.

2) No meta-gaming. Your character doesn't know anything that your character hasn't found out in character. If your character is an eavesdropper/has psychic powers/etc, you still need to ask permission to have your character overhear a conversation.

3) Keep IC and OOC separate.

4) IC actions have IC consequences.

5) Respect other players.

6) Players should be 18 or older. Characters should be at least 16. Characters under 18 may be aged up to 18, but don't have to be, as long as they are at least 16. Please take any smut with under-aged characters to a musebox or other personal space.

7) Activity Check. As Cape Kore is now a musebox, there is no activity check. We ask that if you have no intention of playing a character any more that you do drop them. We will still maintain the Taken and OOC contact lists.
FAQ
OOC Mechanics

How many characters can each player have?
Players can have up to 5 characters.

I'm in the game, and I'd like to pick up a new character. How do I do that?
Comment on the taken post using the form, join the communities, and wait until the journal is approved.

I'm not in the game, and I'd like to join. How do I do that?
We ask that all new players have a current player send the mod account a PM where they simply let us know that they vouch for you. Then comment on the Taken page and join the communities. If there's been a problem, we'll let you know.

Do you allow OCs or AUs?
We allow both original and fandom OCs, so long as they have no ties to canon characters (IE You can play a hunter from the Supernatural universe, but you cannot play anyone's fan-created child or long-lost twin). We do not allow player-created AUs of canon characters (IE Rule 63, making a character a vampire, etc.)

Can I import CR from another game?
At this time, we are not allowing CR importing from other games.

Do characters keep powers?
Yes, but we have mechanics in place to curb anything game-breaking. Your character cannot teleport/fly/speed-run/whatever past the edge of the area. In fact, as they get closer, their powers will stop working. They cannot use any psychic powers to see or reach out beyond the edge, either.

How does time pass in the game?
Three days in the real world are equal to one day in the game world. Time operates at the 3:1 ratio. There is a calendar to help you keep track of what day it is.

What can my character bring with them?
Whatever fits on their person.

Can my character bring their pet?
Sure!

I have an idea for a plot. What can I do with it?
We highly encourage all players to come up with plots and run them as they like. We do ask that people be mindful of what plots may currently be going on, so as not to overwhelm anyone. The Submit a Plot post is still open, and we may still draw from it, so you could submit your idea there if you didn't want to run it. We'll leave the ideas unscreened, so it's more of an Adopt a Plot page.

IC Mechanics

What is the machine?
The machine is the strange device that is bringing the people to this location, and it is in control of when people leave. While it started out as simply a machine, it now seems to be developing attachments to its people and this environment it's controlling. While the machine may choose to send people home (the IC reasoning for when a character is dropped or sent on hiatus), it can become very upset if your character tries to leave on their own. Or if your character is too unhappy with the building, or the food, or their life here...

If your character complains too much or too vocally, they may find themselves punished by the machine. This can take the form of physical pain, however brief or intense you choose, or other forms of punishment, such as a temporary power loss, or maybe your character gets lost constantly in the house for a few days, etc.

What will the machine supply?
Your character can try their luck at asking the machine for supplies. They may visit the machine in its lab to ask in person, or experiment with how closely the machine is monitoring them by asking elsewhere within the game setting. Smaller, more generic requests -- yarn, bullets for their gun, books to read -- will have a higher chance of success over larger or overly specific requests.

If the machine finds the request acceptable, it will grant it, and the character will find their requested item in their room. (If the character asks from their room, they need to exit and reenter; the item will be there if granted.) If the machine does not find it acceptable, they may be punished. This may come in the form of physical punishment -- pain, illness, an unfortunate hair color, temporary power loss -- or in receiving an item that's the opposite of what was requested.

Can my character's receive a specific item from their canon?
If you would like your character to acquire larger items, or more specialized items, etc., then you may consider those a "special gift" from the machine. They aren't frequent events, and we ask that players self-regulate when it comes to not spoiling their characters.

Can my character find experiments and strange technology?
Certainly! If you would like your character to find something that will affect or change anything or anyone in a significant way or if you have an idea for something that could be fun for the entire game, feel free to integrate it.

Where does the food come from?
The food in the kitchen seems to come from everywhere and anywhere, much like the people the machine pulls in. There will always be more unfamiliar foods than familiar ones, as the more common items will have to be used up completely before they are replenished. This should encourage characters to experiment with foods or cooking supplies that seem equivalent to what they would use normally.

Sometimes these equivalent foods are acceptable; sometimes the taste is off, or maybe even better. Sometimes the unfamiliar foods can cause problems for your character. This can include food poisoning, hallucinations, temporary power loss; it's up to you as a player how little or how much you'd like your character to be affected. It's also possible that a kind of food may not affect everyone in the same way. Maybe a character is allergic, or maybe the food is just metabolised in different ways.

Why and how is my character now capable of dream-hopping? What will they be able to experience?
Starting on Day 83, the residents of Cape Kore experienced some pretty invasive dream-merging whenever they fell asleep. Some people didn't realize what was going on until after they woke up. Others were fully aware that they were in a dream and were able to manipulate their surroundings. Closer to Day 85, the dreamers were more likely to end up in a collective dream set in a crystalline city. Since Day 88, the dream invasions have ended, but if your character tries hard enough they will still be able to access the collective dream with other players. With enough effort and practice, some characters may even still be able to dream-hop into specific people's dreams. Both of these options are open to players for plotting purposes at any time in the game unless otherwise specified.

What is the crystalline city like (other than crystalline)?
The city is filled with faceless, human-shaped figures. Are they human? You character's eyes can't seem to focus on them enough to tell. The only clear people they can make out are each other, but one thing is very clear; the figures around them are afraid.

How do the characters access the network?
The characters use mobile devices to access the network. The devices are capable of text, audio, and video messaging. It is not possible to hack into another character's threads or messages once they have been marked as private. Public threads are visible to all characters, however.

What happens if my character tries to escape through the woods?
There are woods as far as your character can currently walk. Characters with powers will find their powers growing weaker and weaker the farther they walk. Once characters reach a certain point, they will be turned around and eventually they will find themselves back at The Science Center.

What happens when a character is dropped?
They are gone. It's as if they went for a walk and never came home. Non-one-of-a-kind personal items may be left behind (think clothing or generic mass-produced items like guns). This may change for certain plots, as the meta-plot moves along or if a player would like to plan their character's exit.

What happens when a character is placed on hiatus?
Characters on official hiatus may disappear from the game setting. Upon returning, they may find themselves disoriented or behaving strangely for a few days. They may have nightmares.

Can my character die?
Yes. They will wake up later in their room with full memories of the incident.

Can I fourth-wall another character?
No. If your character watches a show/reads a book/whatever that another character is from, you can make reference to an analogous thing that contains a similar, but not the exact same world and cast of characters. The only time fourth-walling is allowed is when it has been done in the source canon (IE the Supernatural books in Supernatural). Pop culture references that are vague or about canons not currently represented in the game are absolutely fine.

What exactly is the game's stance on Welcome to Night Vale characters? Some games require that Cecil remain a voice-only character and disallow other characters (such as Carlos or Intern Dana), whereas others allow all characters that have been given a sufficient amount of information through Cecil's broadcasts.

YET ANOTHER NIGHT VALE POTENTIAL APPER QUESTIONEE okay hi there, friendly mods!! I have like two quick questions. First, re: technology--does a watch count? I just want to be absolutely positive @A@ (AKA this is a dumb question but I wanna be sure.) It's just a simple wristwatch, analog, nothing exciting. And then second, sample wise, would a post from another game be alright as a first person sample? I.e., I linked a thread for the one that required interaction, but took a very long post I used in another setting to use as a first person. I can definitely change it to fit the setting, if that'd be preferred!

Thank you so so much. ♥!

Hi! Just to check, do characters still arrive without complex technology now that they're in the Science Centre? I assume so but I just thought I'd better check since it'd make a pretty big difference in Julian's case what with all his fancy Starfleet equipment.
